  • Homework 1 - Due Sep 11

You may work in groups, but the homework must be done individually.

    1. Ch 8. homework problem 3a. Use Table A.9 and terminal branch for terminal artery.
    2. Ch 8. homework problem 6.
    3. Ch 8. homework problem 11.
    4. Assume that you measure the blood pressure in a patient’s arm and find the systolic/diastolic blood pressure to be 12080 mmHg. Then, you ask the patient to raise her arm and measure the blood pressure again. What systolic and diastolic blood pressures would you expect to see? Assume that the cuff is approximately \(1~\textrm{ft}\) above the heart when you make the measurement.
    5. Consider an artery that has narrowed due to atherosclerosis. The narrow artery has a resistance of \(R_{narrow}=700~\textrm{Pa s/m}^3\). An interventional radiologist surgically attaches a bypass artery to help improve blood flow. The bypass artery has a resistance of \(R_{bypass}=50~\textrm{Pa s/m}^3\). Assume that the volumetric flow rate in the narrowed artery was \(Q=5~\textrm{L/min}\) prior to the surgery. Answer the following:

      a. What was the volumetric flow rate in the narrowed artery before surgery?
      b. What is the volumetric flow rate in the narrowed artery after surgery?
